Virgo zodiac sign: dates, personality and compatibility
Virgo is the sixth sign of the zodiac: the Sun usually passes through it from August 23 to September 22, although the boundary shifts from year to year. It's a mutable earth sign ruled by Mercury. Virgos notice what others miss — a typo, an unnecessary expense, the tiredness in your voice — and quietly do something about it.

Leo or Virgo: if your birthday is August 22–23
August 23 is the trickiest day here: in most years the Sun changes sign during it. Born in the morning, you may be a Leo; in the evening, already a Virgo. August 22 is more often entirely Leo, but there are exceptions.
Virgos prefer precision to “roughly,” so I don't guess — I check the table of the Sun's entries by year. Enter your date and year in the zodiac sign calculator; if the day is borderline, you'll need your birth time too.
Virgo personality
Virgo has an inner editor that never clocks out: they see that the picture is crooked, the contract has the wrong clause, the soup needs salt. Astrological tradition credits Mercury, the planet of the mind and of details. It isn't nitpicking — they genuinely feel uneasy when something could have been done well and wasn't.
Earth makes Virgo practical: they love usefulness you can touch. Their care looks less like declarations and more like a flask of tea for the road, a reminder about the doctor, a vacation budget spreadsheet. The mutable modality adds flexibility: Virgos happily rework a plan if the new one makes more sense.
But the inner editor works against them too: a Virgo can spend a month polishing a text that was ready a week ago, and a week worrying over a phrase nobody noticed. I know the feeling — once I recalculated the Moon's position three times, and it was right the first time.
Virgo strengths
- Notices details that other people miss
- Keeps promises and meets deadlines
- Helps with actions, not just words
- Brings order to chaos — in a closet or in a project
- Learns fast and loves figuring out how things work
- Says honestly when something is going wrong
Virgo weaknesses
- Criticizes even when nobody asked
- Is too hard on themselves and their mistakes
- Worries about small things that haven't happened yet
- Struggles to delegate: “it's quicker if I do it myself”
- Puts off joy until everything is perfect
Virgo in love
Before falling in love, a Virgo takes a careful look: how you talk to the waiter, whether you're late, whether you keep your word in small things. It isn't coldness, it's a reliability check — Virgos don't like risking their heart blind.
After that, their love is very concrete. A Virgo will remember that you can't stand coriander, find you a good dentist and notice before you do that you need sleep. In return they need little: thanks for this invisible work and respect for their sense of order.
Virgo shares a language of plans with the earth signs Taurus and Capricorn: five stars in my table. It's warm with Cancer and Scorpio — water softens Virgo's strictness. Gemini and Aquarius are harder: too many ideas, too little order, in Virgo's view.
The Virgo man
The Virgo man shows feelings through reliability. He won't forget tomorrow's job interview, he'll fix the shelf you mentioned a month ago, and he'll understand your insurance better than the insurer. Big words may take a while — his actions speak first.
How can you tell if a Virgo man likes you? He spends his most valuable resources on you — time and attention to detail: he remembers what you love, adjusts his plans, asks follow-up questions. The criticism stays; it just becomes caring.
The Virgo woman
The Virgo woman is composed, wry and very observant, always with tissues, a spare charger and a backup plan. She hates being rushed or having decisions made for her: first she has to figure things out herself.
Behind the strictness there's a lot of tenderness, shown only to people she trusts. She values a partner she can feel calm with: no drama out of nothing, agreements that are kept. Then her strictness turns into a warm “I've thought of everything — just relax.”
Virgo at work and with money
Virgo is a born professional, suited to work that values precision and usefulness: analytics, medicine, editing, accounting, software development, research, anything with a checklist. Virgo finds the bug before launch and calmly fixes it while others panic.
With money Virgos are careful: they know where every expense goes and compare prices. Their risk is underrating themselves — doing the work of two for years and feeling awkward about asking for a raise. I'd suggest keeping a list of your achievements as carefully as your to-do list, and bringing it to the salary talk.
Virgo compatibility with the zodiac signs
Virgos like to know where a number comes from. Here's mine: one to five stars by the angle between the signs and their elements, as in my bots — and next to each rating I write why.
| Sign | Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 2 out of 5 | Quincunx — fire and earth: your pace and habits don't match, so you take turns adjusting to each other. |
| Taurus | 5 out of 5 | Trine — earth: you're both practical and see money, home and plans alike, so building together comes easily. |
| Gemini | 1 out of 5 | Square — earth and air: practical meets dreamer — one wants results, the other a mood, so expect arguments. |
| Cancer | 4 out of 5 | Sextile — earth and water: one gives footing, the other warmth, and together it feels cozy and solid. |
| Leo | 3 out of 5 | Next-door signs — fire and earth: one charges ahead, the other tests the ground, so you learn from each other. |
| Virgo | 4 out of 5 | Same sign — earth on both sides: you both prize reliability, though together you can get stuck in habit. |
| Libra | 2 out of 5 | Next-door signs — earth and air: one thinks in tasks, the other in ideas, and each notices what the other misses. |
| Scorpio | 4 out of 5 | Sextile — earth and water: one gives footing, the other warmth, and together it feels cozy and solid. |
| Sagittarius | 2 out of 5 | Square — fire and earth: one rushes, the other digs in — real friction, but together you get things moving. |
| Capricorn | 5 out of 5 | Trine — earth: you're both practical and see money, home and plans alike, so building together comes easily. |
| Aquarius | 1 out of 5 | Quincunx — earth and air: you speak of one thing but hear another — a direct question helps. |
| Pisces | 3 out of 5 | Opposition — earth and water: two poles drawn to each other — one gives shape, the other gives depth. |
Virgo Sun, Moon and rising sign
The Sun in Virgo covers the essentials: what a person values and how they want to live. But character is built from details — and Virgos appreciate details. The Moon shows how someone feels and calms down; the ascendant, or rising sign, the first impression they make.
A Virgo with the Moon in Sagittarius can be giggly and a bit chaotic; with Leo rising, noticeable in any crowd. If “typical Virgo” doesn't quite fit you, look to your Moon or ascendant — for those you need your date, time and city of birth.
Virgo FAQ
What are the Virgo dates?
Usually from August 23 to September 22. Both boundaries move: the Sun enters Virgo on August 22 or 23 and moves into Libra on September 22 or 23, depending on the year.
What zodiac sign is August 23?
The most disputed day: in most years the Sun moves from Leo into Virgo during August 23. Born before that moment, you're a Leo; after it, a Virgo. You need the year and time of birth — check in the calculator.
Is Virgo an earth sign?
Yes. Along with Taurus and Capricorn, Virgo is an earth sign, and the most flexible of the three: its modality is mutable.
Why are Virgos so difficult to love?
Because Virgos have high standards — for themselves and for others. From the outside that can look like fault-finding. But Virgo's difficulty is honest: they point out what's wrong to make it better, not to hurt.
Why do Virgos like to be alone?
Virgos need time to sort their thoughts. Noise and other people's expectations get in the way, and alone they recharge faster — then come back to their people with fresh energy.
What is Virgo compatible with?
Best with Taurus and Capricorn: earth with earth, five stars in my table. Four stars with Cancer, Scorpio and another Virgo. Hardest with Gemini and Aquarius.
What is Virgo's ruling planet?
Mercury, the planet of the mind, speech and details. It also rules Gemini, but in Virgo it shows up in a grounded way: in analysis, order and usefulness.
