Libra zodiac sign: dates, traits and compatibility
Libra is the seventh sign of the zodiac: the Sun usually passes through it from September 23 to October 22, and the exact boundary changes by year. A cardinal air sign ruled by Venus. Libras read a room better than any barometer, look for beauty and fairness — and hate choosing between two good options.

Virgo or Libra: if your birthday is September 22–23
The Virgo–Libra boundary is the September equinox, and it moves. In most years the Sun enters Libra during September 23, sometimes on the 22nd. So for these two days the date alone isn't enough: I need the year, and sometimes the time.
Time zones are another trap. In 2026 the Sun entered Libra on September 23 at 00:05 UTC: in London it was already the small hours of the 23rd, in New York still the evening of the 22nd. The zodiac sign calculator handles the year and the minute — no weighing required.
Libra traits
Take a Libra to a café and watch: they notice the harsh lighting, the music that's too loud, the couple at the next table about to argue. And they're first to restore the balance: switch seats, change the subject, crack a joke. Beauty and falseness register with them equally fast — no wonder tradition gives Libra Venus.
Libra's element is air, hence their sociability and curiosity about people. They want to know how others think, can hear out both sides and honestly admit both have a point. The cardinal modality adds initiative: Libras don't just make peace, they propose new rules that work for everyone.
Anyone who has eaten out with a Libra knows the downside: the menu gets studied at length, and “what are you having?” is asked about three times. Libras weigh things so carefully that the moment sometimes passes. My trick for them: decide within a minute if dinner is at stake, and sleep on it if your life is.
Libra strengths
- Sees both sides of any argument
- Knows how to reconcile people and smooth rough edges
- Has a fine sense of beauty, style and atmosphere
- Stays tactful even in a difficult conversation
- Makes friends easily and keeps in touch for years
- Values fairness and a fair game
Libra weaknesses
- Takes ages to choose, even between two good options
- Avoids conflict until the problem grows
- Sometimes agrees just to avoid upsetting someone
- Depends too much on other people's approval
- Keeps putting off unpleasant conversations
Libra in love
Libra is the sign of partnership, and love isn't an add-on to their life but a central part of it. They court beautifully: a well-timed compliment, a date with carefully planned atmosphere, a gift that fits your taste better than anyone else's.
Libras need an equal — not someone who gives orders, and not someone who dissolves into them, but a person they can reach agreements with. Rudeness and chaos wear them out; a calm talk about a problem, even a hard one, means a lot. Just don't push a Libra to decide in the heat of the moment: they need time to think.
Easiest for Libra are fellow air signs Gemini and Aquarius: five stars in my table, light and interesting. Warm with Leo and Sagittarius — fire gives Libra courage. Harder with Taurus and Capricorn: earth feels too heavy to Libra, and Libra too changeable to earth.
The Libra man
The Libra man is charming without pushing. He's well dressed, can keep any conversation going and almost never raises his voice. He's pleasant company: he remembers your stories and asks questions you actually want to answer.
What kind of woman does a Libra man like? One who makes him feel both calm and interested: with taste, opinions of her own and the ability to argue without shouting. He takes big steps slowly, but once he decides, he builds the relationship like a fair and beautiful agreement.
The Libra woman
The Libra woman is a diplomat with excellent taste. One question from her eases the tension at the table; one detail — a scarf, a lamp, a branch in a vase — changes the whole room. People love her lightness, but that lightness is the result of a lot of inner work.
Unfairness weighs on her, and she'll gently but persistently work for balance — at home, at work, among friends. Be honest with her: Libras detect falseness instantly, even if politeness keeps them from showing it.
Libra at work and with money
Libras are strong wherever taste and negotiation matter: design, fashion, architecture, law, working with people and clients. They can find the wording that lets both sides sign the contract and leave happy.
Libras like spending money on beauty — good things, experiences, gifts. Saving bores them, but for a beautiful goal, like a trip or a dream home, they show surprising discipline. Their weak spot is negotiating their own salary: asking for themselves feels awkward. Imagine you're negotiating for your best friend — you'll be much firmer.
Libra compatibility with all signs
Choosing is hard for Libras, so I chose for them: all twelve pairs, one to five stars, rated by the angle between the signs and their elements — as in my bots.
| Sign | Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 3 out of 5 | Opposition — fire and air: opposite, yet on one wavelength — you egg each other on and argue for fun. |
| Taurus | 1 out of 5 | Quincunx — earth and air: you speak of one thing but hear another — a direct question helps. |
| Gemini | 5 out of 5 | Trine — air: there's always something to talk about, and you catch each other's thoughts without crowding. |
| Cancer | 2 out of 5 | Square — air and water: one explains, the other feels, and your words don't always reach the heart. |
| Leo | 4 out of 5 | Sextile — fire and air: air fans the flame — ideas and nerve feed each other, and it's never dull. |
| Virgo | 2 out of 5 | Next-door signs — earth and air: one thinks in tasks, the other in ideas, and each notices what the other misses. |
| Libra | 4 out of 5 | Same sign — air on both sides: you can talk forever, and you put off decisions together too. |
| Scorpio | 3 out of 5 | Next-door signs — air and water: head and heart see one thing differently, and you complement each other well. |
| Sagittarius | 4 out of 5 | Sextile — fire and air: air fans the flame — ideas and nerve feed each other, and it's never dull. |
| Capricorn | 1 out of 5 | Square — earth and air: practical meets dreamer — one wants results, the other a mood, so expect arguments. |
| Aquarius | 5 out of 5 | Trine — air: there's always something to talk about, and you catch each other's thoughts without crowding. |
| Pisces | 2 out of 5 | Quincunx — air and water: logic and feelings pull apart, so say out loud what you actually need. |
Libra Sun, Moon and rising sign
The Sun in Libra is what a person strives for; the Moon governs feelings; the ascendant, or rising sign, manner and first impressions. In Libras this shows clearly: they adapt to whoever they're with and show different sides.
A Libra with the Moon in Scorpio is deeper and more jealous than sign descriptions suggest, and with Aries rising, far more decisive. A Libra who chooses fast and enjoys a good argument? Look at your Moon and ascendant — they're calculated from your date, time and city of birth.
Libra FAQ
What are the Libra dates?
Usually from September 23 to October 22. The Sun enters Libra at the moment of the September equinox — on September 22 or 23, depending on the year.
What zodiac sign is September 23?
Not without the year: in most years the Sun moves from Virgo into Libra during September 23. Born before that moment, you're a Virgo; after it, a Libra. Check your date, year and time in the calculator.
Is Libra an air sign?
Yes, along with Gemini and Aquarius. Of the three air signs Libra is the cardinal one: it doesn't just discuss ideas, it gets them started.
What is Libra ruled by?
Venus, the planet of love, beauty and harmony. It also rules Taurus, but in Libra its power goes into relationships, taste and a sense of fairness.
What is Libra compatible with?
In my table, best of all with Gemini and Aquarius. Warm with Leo, Sagittarius and another Libra. Hardest with Taurus and Capricorn.
Why are Libras and Cancers not compatible?
They're square: Cancer lives by feelings and home, Libra by conversation and balance, and each feels unheard. In my table the score is modest but not hopeless — it helps to talk everything through out loud.
What's the difference between a September Libra and an October Libra?
Their Sun is in the same sign, just at different degrees. Differences in character usually come more from the Moon and the ascendant than from the month of birth.
