Scorpio zodiac sign: dates, traits, compatibility
Scorpio is the eighth sign of the zodiac: the Sun usually passes through it from October 23 to November 21, but the boundary with Libra shifts by year. A fixed water sign ruled by Pluto — and, in the older tradition, Mars. Scorpios feel deeply, keep quiet about what matters most and remember both kindness and betrayal for years.

Libra or Scorpio: if your birthday is October 22–24
This boundary spans three dates. Usually the Sun enters Scorpio during October 23, but in some years on the evening of the 22nd, in others not until early on the 24th, UTC. So “October 23” alone isn't an answer.
If you were born on one of these days, I need the year, sometimes the time. And mind your time zone: the table is in UTC, and your local date may differ. The quickest check is the zodiac sign calculator.
Scorpio personality
Scorpio is a water sign, but not a quiet pond — a deep lake: calm on the surface, currents below. Scorpios say little about their feelings and feel a lot. They can listen silently all evening, then name in one sentence the thing everyone has been avoiding. They're hard to fool: they read tone, pauses and what goes unsaid.
Astrologers give Scorpio two rulers. The older tradition says Mars — hence the willpower, persistence and readiness to fight for what's theirs. The modern one says Pluto, the planet of transformation and all things hidden. Together they make a sign unafraid of crisis: where others look for the exit, Scorpio looks for the cause.
The fixed modality makes Scorpio constant — in love, in friendship, and in grudges too. As a cat, I understand Scorpios well: we also take our time before trusting anyone, and we can't stand being stroked the wrong way.
Scorpio strengths
- Sees through people and senses falseness instantly
- Keeps other people's secrets better than any safe
- Doesn't give up where others quit
- Stays loyal to their people to the end
- Keeps calm in a crisis and acts under pressure
- Dives deep into whatever they love
Scorpio weaknesses
- Holds grudges for a long time and rarely forgets
- Gets jealous even when there's no reason
- Tests people instead of asking directly
- Hides feelings so well that nobody understands them
- Can turn sharp when someone touches a nerve
Scorpio in love
Scorpios can't love by halves. A Scorpio in love gives themselves away through attention: they remember everything you tell them, ask questions nobody else dared to ask and want to know all of you — not just your best side.
Why does a Scorpio pull away when in love? Strong feelings scare them: they hate losing control. They may step back to sort themselves out, or set up a quiet test. Stay close, calmly and honestly, and they'll come back — this time for real.
They need loyalty and depth; flirting on the side, secrets and half-truths get noticed and remembered. In my table Scorpio does best with fellow water signs Cancer and Pisces, who understand feelings without words. Things go well with Virgo and Capricorn — earth gives water its banks. Hardest are Aries and Leo: too much fire, too much fighting over who's in charge.
The Scorpio man
The Scorpio man is composed and says little. He doesn't open up to strangers, but he watches and listens closely. His interest shows at once: he's focused entirely on you, phone out of sight.
He protects his people and expects the same loyalty in return. Don't play jealousy games with him — he'll take them seriously. But he respects honesty, even uncomfortable honesty: with a Scorpio man, a hard truth is better than a convenient half-truth.
The Scorpio woman
The Scorpio woman draws attention without trying: the look, the pauses, the sense that she knows more about you than you've told her. She opens up slowly and keeps secrets — her own and other people's.
She's strong but not cold. Her love is deep and demanding: she needs a partner who isn't afraid of real conversations and doesn't disappear when things get hard. If she trusts you, you have an ally who will go all the way for you.
Scorpio at work and with money
Scorpio suits work that requires digging deeper: research, investigation, psychology, medicine, finance, analytics, crisis management. Complex problems and other people's secrets don't scare them, and they keep those secrets like professionals.
Scorpio is a strategist with money too: no bragging about income, but a clear sense of where the resources are and where the leaks are. They know how to save, invest and wait. The risk is going all in on principle, or dragging out a fight with the boss because “it's not about the money.” My advice: before a battle for the truth, decide what result you actually need.
Scorpio compatibility with other signs
Promises don't impress Scorpio; calculations do. Each pair gets one to five stars, by the angle between the signs and their elements, as in my bots.
| Sign | Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 1 out of 5 | Quincunx — fire and water: you speak different languages, and understanding comes through patience and honest words. |
| Taurus | 3 out of 5 | Opposition — earth and water: two poles drawn to each other — one gives shape, the other gives depth. |
| Gemini | 2 out of 5 | Quincunx — air and water: logic and feelings pull apart, so say out loud what you actually need. |
| Cancer | 5 out of 5 | Trine — water: you sense each other's mood before words — it's warm, though feelings can run high. |
| Leo | 1 out of 5 | Square — fire and water: steam and hissing — one needs action, the other feeling, so talk it through. |
| Virgo | 4 out of 5 | Sextile — earth and water: one gives footing, the other warmth, and together it feels cozy and solid. |
| Libra | 3 out of 5 | Next-door signs — air and water: head and heart see one thing differently, and you complement each other well. |
| Scorpio | 4 out of 5 | Same sign — water on both sides: you feel each other without words, and you pile up grudges together. |
| Sagittarius | 2 out of 5 | Next-door signs — fire and water: drive meets sensitivity — you're very different, and getting used to each other takes time. |
| Capricorn | 4 out of 5 | Sextile — earth and water: one gives footing, the other warmth, and together it feels cozy and solid. |
| Aquarius | 2 out of 5 | Square — air and water: one explains, the other feels, and your words don't always reach the heart. |
| Pisces | 5 out of 5 | Trine — water: you sense each other's mood before words — it's warm, though feelings can run high. |
Scorpio Sun, Moon and rising sign
The Sun in Scorpio stands for will and main goals. But Scorpio is the sign of the hidden, and much lies deeper: in the Moon, which governs feelings, and in the ascendant, or rising sign, which shapes first impressions.
A Scorpio with the Moon in Gemini can be light and chatty, and with Libra rising, gentle and diplomatic on the surface. To find your Moon and ascendant, you need your date, time and city of birth.
Scorpio FAQ
What are the Scorpio dates?
Usually from October 23 to November 21. The Sun's entry into Scorpio moves between October 22 and 24, so on the cusp you need the birth year.
What zodiac sign is October 23?
Most often it's the day of the switch: in most years the Sun enters Scorpio during October 23. Anyone born before that moment is a Libra, after it a Scorpio. Check the year and time in the calculator.
Why are Scorpios water signs?
Because Scorpio is a sign of feelings, and in astrology feelings belong to water. Its water looks deep and still: the fixed modality holds emotions in until they gather strength. Cancer and Pisces are its fellow water signs.
What is Scorpio's ruling planet?
Scorpio has two rulers: Pluto in modern astrology and Mars in traditional astrology. From Mars it gets willpower and persistence, from Pluto a pull toward depth and transformation.
What is Scorpio compatible with?
Water with water: best of all with Cancer and Pisces, five stars for these pairs. Good with Virgo, Capricorn and another Scorpio. One star for pairs with Aries and Leo.
Are Scorpio and Aquarius compatible?
They're square, and both are stubborn: Scorpio wants depth and loyalty, Aquarius freedom and distance. To Scorpio, Aquarius seems cold; to Aquarius, Scorpio seems pushy. The score is modest, but honest agreements can make even this pair last.
Why do Scorpios have a bad reputation?
Because they don't show what they feel and test people before trusting them. From outside that looks like a mystery — or a threat. But for the people they trust, Scorpios are easy to be around.
