Aquarius zodiac sign: dates, element, traits and compatibility
Aquarius is the eleventh sign of the zodiac: usually January 20 to February 18, though the boundary shifts from year to year. A fixed air sign ruled by Uranus and, traditionally, by Saturn. Aquarians are friends with everyone, argue with authority and invent the future before it arrives. Yet very few get close.

Born January 19–21?
Aquarius usually begins on January 20, and that's most often the day the Sun crosses over. In 2026, for example, it happened on January 20 at 01:45 UTC, so almost all of that UTC day was Aquarius. In another year the change may come in the evening, and then most of the 20th is still Capricorn.
Sometimes it shifts by a whole day. The earliest entry in the table is January 19, 2029, at 19:01 UTC, the latest January 21, 1952, at 02:38 UTC. Born on January 19, 20 or 21? Tell me the year, and the calculator will show the changeover to the minute.
At the other end, Aquarius gives way to Pisces on February 18 or 19. Those days need a year too: see the Pisces page.
Aquarius personality
Aquarius is the person in the group who knows everyone but calls no one their best friend. They'll start a group chat for half the city and talk to two people in it. Tradition makes it the sign of friendship, communities and ideas bigger than one person.
Air makes Aquarius a thinker, the fixed modality makes them stubborn. It's a rare mix: open to any new idea except the idea that they might be wrong. Uranus, the modern ruler, stands for sudden insights and rebellion; Saturn, the traditional one, for persistence and system. So Aquarius can spend years methodically building a small revolution.
I love Aquarians for their odd hobbies. One repairs old radios, another learns a rare language, a third knows more about space than the physics teacher. Aquarius gets boring only when someone tries to make them “like everyone else.”
Aquarius strengths
- Thinks unconventionally and doesn't mind seeming odd
- A loyal friend who never asks for reports
- Gets along easily with very different people
- Stands up for the weak and argues with injustice
- Doesn't hold grudges or make scenes
- Sees how things will work years from now
Aquarius weaknesses
- Withdraws when a conversation gets too personal
- Clings stubbornly to their own theory
- Puts principles above a real person's feelings
- Vanishes for ages, then writes “hi” as if nothing happened
- Argues out of pure contrariness
Aquarius in love
Aquarius falls in love through the head: first they have to find you interesting to talk to. Love often starts as friendship — no accident, but their way of working out who you are. A compliment on their looks works less well than a clever question.
What Aquarius needs most in a couple is freedom and respect for their quirks. Don't read their messages or ask “where were you?” — and they'll tell you more than you expect. Their tenderness is unusual: instead of “I missed you,” they'll send an article that reminded them of you.
Traditionally, Aquarius finds it easiest with air signs Gemini and Libra and fire signs Aries and Sagittarius. Leo, the opposite sign, draws them in with warmth and brightness but argues about the essentials: Leo wants the spotlight, while Aquarius wants to be somewhere outside any spotlight at all.
The Aquarius man
The Aquarius man can be very attentive — to ideas, to the world, to words you dropped in passing long ago. But scheduled romance isn't his thing: he may forget flowers for the occasion, then bring something wildly unexpected for no reason.
What women does an Aquarius man like? Ones with their own opinions and a cause they burn for, who can argue with him till morning without falling out. Jealous scenes won't keep him. What keeps him is the feeling that you're both free — and still choose each other.
The Aquarius woman
The Aquarius woman is the friend people go to for an unexpected take on a problem. She won't sigh and fuss; she'll suggest a solution nobody else thought of. Her style, habits and routes are like no one else's, and that suits her perfectly.
In love she wants an equal, not a guardian. She leaves easily when someone tries to remake her, and stays long where her quirks count as virtues. Her love shows not in words but in how much of her precious free time she gives you.
Aquarius at work and with money
Aquarius needs work where they can invent. Technology, science, research, social projects, design — anything new that baffles the older generation is their territory. They can't stand a boss whose answer is “because that's how it's done,” and they thrive in a team of equals.
Aquarius treats money as a tool: what matters isn't how much but what for. They'll wear one jacket for years yet invest in a friend's wild project. Saturn tells them to keep accounts, Uranus to take risks; better if the first wins, at least about rainy-day savings.
Aquarius compatibility
Below is Aquarius compatibility with every sign, from one to five stars. I work it out from the angle between the signs and the pair of elements, just as in my bots. Aquarius always wants to know why — so every rating comes with an explanation.
| Sign | Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 4 out of 5 | Sextile — fire and air: air fans the flame — ideas and nerve feed each other, and it's never dull. |
| Taurus | 1 out of 5 | Square — earth and air: practical meets dreamer — one wants results, the other a mood, so expect arguments. |
| Gemini | 5 out of 5 | Trine — air: there's always something to talk about, and you catch each other's thoughts without crowding. |
| Cancer | 2 out of 5 | Quincunx — air and water: logic and feelings pull apart, so say out loud what you actually need. |
| Leo | 3 out of 5 | Opposition — fire and air: opposite, yet on one wavelength — you egg each other on and argue for fun. |
| Virgo | 1 out of 5 | Quincunx — earth and air: you speak of one thing but hear another — a direct question helps. |
| Libra | 5 out of 5 | Trine — air: there's always something to talk about, and you catch each other's thoughts without crowding. |
| Scorpio | 2 out of 5 | Square — air and water: one explains, the other feels, and your words don't always reach the heart. |
| Sagittarius | 4 out of 5 | Sextile — fire and air: air fans the flame — ideas and nerve feed each other, and it's never dull. |
| Capricorn | 2 out of 5 | Next-door signs — earth and air: one thinks in tasks, the other in ideas, and each notices what the other misses. |
| Aquarius | 4 out of 5 | Same sign — air on both sides: you can talk forever, and you put off decisions together too. |
| Pisces | 3 out of 5 | Next-door signs — air and water: head and heart see one thing differently, and you complement each other well. |
Aquarius Sun, Moon and rising sign
Aquarius is your Sun, but you're more than your Sun. The Moon in your chart shows how you feel and what comforts you, the ascendant how you come across to others. An Aquarius with a Taurus Moon may dream of changing the world yet hate it when someone moves their mug.
For the Moon and ascendant, a date isn't enough — you also need your birth time and city. Find them, and you may see where the parts of you missing from every Aquarius description come from.
Aquarius FAQ
What month is Aquarius?
January and February: usually January 20 to February 18. The boundary shifts from year to year, so near the edges you need your birth year.
Is Aquarius a water or air sign?
The name makes many think it's a water sign, but Aquarius is air, along with Gemini and Libra. The water bearer on its symbol pours water for others — an image of the knowledge and ideas Aquarius shares.
What planet rules Aquarius?
It has two rulers. In modern astrology it's Uranus, the planet of change and sudden insight; in traditional astrology, Saturn, the planet of structure and persistence.
Who is Aquarius most compatible with?
Gemini and Libra, the same air, top my table, followed by Aries and Sagittarius. Leo, the opposite sign, attracts, but the two will argue about the big things. Ratings with every sign are in the compatibility table.
What zodiac sign is January 20?
Most often that's the day the Sun moves from Capricorn into Aquarius, so birth year and time decide. Check your year in the calculator — the changeover is given to the minute there.
What are Aquarius weaknesses?
Stubbornness about ideas, detachment in matters of the heart and a habit of arguing for the sake of it. And they can vanish for ages and honestly not see why anyone's hurt.
